Okay, the douchebag comment aside, I’m going to assume this is a real question … 

And the quick answer is that it is quite possible to interpret game canon in a way that shows Loghain is not, actually, a douchebag. He is a national hero, beloved for thirty years by the people of Ferelden. He has very good canonical reasons to be suspicious of both the Orlesians and the Grey Wardens. David Gaider has said that Loghain didn’t plan for Cailan to die at Ostagar (his retreat was a decision made on the spur of the moment because of the situation, and judging by the cutscene, Cailan would still have died even if Loghain had taken the field).

Yes, very much this. Loghain is basically an excellent example of an anti-hero;  someone whose actions you may not agree with, but whose motives and/or storyline give you many reasons to sympathize with him.

Yeah, I personally still don’t like game!Loghain, but The Stolen Throne puts him in an entirely different light. It’s almost heartbreaking to see what he becomes compared to what he once was.
