Does your character have siblings? If so, what are their names? What are they like? What does your character think of them? What is their relationship like? What is the worst thing one of your character’s siblings did to them (at any stage of their lives)? What was the worst thing your character did to their siblings?
If your character does not have siblings, did they ever wish for them? Why or why not?
All three of my main characters do have siblings, though only two of them are/were actually aware of them. Elissa has big brother Fergus (plus sister-in-law Oriana). Ria, obviously, had the twins at her heels as she was growing up. And Vrania has an unknown number of siblings (probably two, with her as the middle child, but that’s not certain), at least one of which is also a mage.
Most of Elissa and Fergus’s relationship growing up was good, but there was a healthy amount of older-brother-assholishness and little-sister-brattiness mixed in at times as well. Elissa had a noticeable stutter when she was very young, and Fergus teased her about it even long after she’d overcome the issue. By and far, the worst thing Elissa ever did to her older brother was when he teased her a bit too far in her eleventh summer and she got so pissed that she very nearly broke his nose. The Couslands were in Denerim for a few weeks so Bryce could attend the Landsmeet, and Fergus was showing off with Cailan, and humiliating her in front of the prince was the last straw. Fergus never made fun of Elissa’s previous lisp again.
Ria and the twins grow up pretty close to how we’re told in the game, with Ria and Bethany closer to their father (in spite of Ria not being a mage) and Carver sometimes feeling left out. Ria herself might be a tiny thing (she’s barely 5’2”) but she casts a very long shadow, which Carver never thought he could climb out of no matter how tall he grew. And, well… big sis didn’t do much to help matters there. She teased him mercilessly and constantly instigated “anything you can do I can do better” contests with him, which she would normally cheat to win if necessary.
Vrania has heard hearsay that her mother “lost many children” to the Circle, but she’s never seen any sort of confirmation to that fact. She has no interest in finding them, if they’re even still alive.
Brennacedria’s Ria Hawke and Anders Prelim sketch! I think this is my last prelim for today. ^_^
Lookit my babies snugglin’!
Elissa would probably have ended up in an arranged marriage to Teagan after all, or else would have succeeded in her plan to run away to Orlais to escape the wedding. Considering they still would have had to escape Lothering for Kirkwall, Ria would have just continued working for Athenril until she managed to get enough status within the gang to branch off on her own. Vrania would been raised a noble in Kirkwall if she were totally mundane, or if still a mage but nothing “special” would have died during Uldred’s rebellion if she hadn’t managed to escape at that time.
I don’t know, really… Elissa is endlessly curious and genuinely interested in things she doesn’t understand. Ria honestly believes in mage freedom due to the way she was raised. If anything, she publicly downplays that passion early on just to fit in, until she and Anders become involved. And Vrania is 100% no-fucks-given. Only if she needs to establish herself in a community so that they treat her as one of their own if and when the templars come does she do anything other than just live like a normal, non-magey person.
Elissa primarily has all sorts of official tomes, filled with the sort of information we’d find in the codexes, the info from the wiki that would be known in-universe and not just as meta, and the World of Thedas book—an entire library’s worth of that sort of thing and then some. She does also have her private library, which includes both more work-related things (including but not limited to private Warden documents about the histories of the Blights, as opposed to public layman works on the topic) and epics and novels and such for personal enjoyment for the rare occasion she gets to read for pleasure anymore. And yes, quite a few of her “personal” books are trashy novels of mostly Nevarran and Orlesian origin, in addition to silly adventure stories.
Ria doesn’t read often, because she’d rather be doing something than just sitting in place, so her library at the estate is mostly filled with her mother’s collection. I’m sure Isabela probably provided a few choice selections that Leandra pretended to be scandalized to find, however.
Vrania doesn’t typically have the luxury of shelves, though, since she’s on the move so often. Just enough belongings to fit in a pack or two and off she goes whenever the templars seem to be sniffing her out. Back when she had access to the Circle’s library she was more likely to be studying above her approved level after curfew than to be reading anything traditionally considered “pleasure” reading. Although like Ria, she often prefers to be doing than just sitting; so, reading was fine when there was something to get out of it but for leisure she was far more likely to play cards or chess with her not-friend Alim. (She was willing to confide certain secrets to him, but never actually considered him a friend as he was an elf and she had been nobility before coming to the Circle.)
Brian saw that post about my Ria-stealing-the-queen’s-hat dream and decided to photoshop Ria wearing one of the queen’s hats. >.< Unfortunately, he picked art that’s been done of Ria, instead of a screen cap, and while funny I don’t want to post it and chance THAT coming up if people search for the artist. *sigh* I’ve sent him the link to my proper Ria tag as well as to my Ria-only tumblr so hopefully he’ll just pick a proper screen cap and redo the ‘shop with one of MY pictures, then I’ll be able to post that instead.
…Yeah, I could definitely see Ria being interested in role play. More with Isabela than with Anders, though, I think.
Elissa: Serpent’s song clawing at her soul.
Ria: Loves hats, daggers, ale, and apostates.
(If I can think one up for Vrania I’ll add it in later; technically she’s not a Warden though and I don’t want to make this post wait on her anymore.)
Oh god I almost forgot to post this! So last night, I was up and down all night like once an hour, so I was able to remember a bunch of funny/weird dreams that I’d had. The main one was a weird case of real world meets Dragon Age, where me-as-Ria was at some sort of sporting event also attended by the Queen of England. As usual whenever the I’ve seen photos of the queen in public… she was wearing a hat. A modest hat, because she would never wear something so garish as Ria’s usual tastes, but still a hat.
Me-Ria couldn’t resist it.
I-we managed somehow to casually pick the hat up off her head and put it on my-our own as we walked past, then when we got to the edge of the stands we made a run for it because security finally noticed. We managed to get away, and then flash forward however far ahead to watching a report about the theft on the news, which I-we spent at least an hour cackling over and sending links of the video to every one we knew.
What the hell, lol?
Drinking head canon? Ria is a very happy, very affectionate, sometimes handsy drunk. And even when she’s not being handsy, she’s still very physically affectionate, hugging on and kissing pretty much all of her friends. She tones down a little bit once she and Anders are together, but only by focusing all the attention on him; the actual amount of attention shown doesn’t change, just the target becomes much more precise. Prior to Anders, and in alt!Ria’s world overall, it makes for some very interesting evenings on the rare occasion that Sebastian accepts her invitations to come play cards with everyone at the Hanged Man.
