I’ve spent a lot of time peering at the big map of Thedas when working on any of my stories that involve travel (which they almost all do). And invariably end up mentally frothing to myself over how little whomever drew it apparently knows about maps, about river confluences and geopolitical influences on the location of cities and whatnot. Which I only have a passing knowledge of myself, but enough to drive me up the wall in trying to make sense of the map.

Let’s look at Ferelden to start, for some examples of the things that give me a twitch when trying to sort out where things are and why.

This is awesome.  I noticed the problem with Ansburg, but a lot of the others I hadn’t thought too much about in terms of geography (though the travel times are just … whoa what).  Anyway, this is great.

I have been begging for a proper elevation map of Ferelden at the very least for about two years now to try and explain those rivers just west of Denerim. >.<

Another set of extracted maps, this time for the City of Amaranthine and environs.

I don’t like this map much, frankly speaking. The one that came with Witcher though… ooooh that one is awesome, I had it on my magnet board for months. Time to put it back, I think.

I reference the Thedan map almost every day.  I should print it out and put it up.

I adore this map. It’s my desktop wallpaper (I have just the map of Ferelden as my iPad wallpaper), and I reference it ALL THE TIME. I have a paper copy, too (from one of the RPG sets). Maybe I’ll frame it and hang it on the wall. I think it’s so pretty, and calming, and sometimes I just look at it for fun. But it’s also good for reference.

Right now I have one Thedas map printed across four sheets of 8.5x11 paper cut and taped together to make one proper document and one single-sheet Fereldan map both posted to the wall by my computer. When I was writing WD, I had the Thedas map, three Fereldan maps (one untouched that was printed in color, another for tracking political alliances, and a third for travel routes/distances/times) and one Deep Roads map plastered around my computer for quick reference. (All but that one untouched map of Ferelden is/was black and white, since I use them for taking notes and such.)
