I can’t even count the number of ways I loved this part of the ending. Especially since so much of the game focused on Squall and Rinoa—my original OTP—having practically all of the non-time-compression parts of the ending focus on everyone BUT them was fantastic. They really are just a bunch of kids, even though they were all forced into much, much larger roles by fate. And finally, when fate’s done with them, they get to be kids again—pigging out on hot dogs and flirting and pretending briefly to be responsible when the adults show up to make sure their little party hasn’t gotten out of hand.

And then the camcorder pans over, and you see Rinoa, and even though you know she’s with him and that they all made it out safely you never see Squall. Not until after the camera’s battery’s died and the last bit of credits have finally run, and the series’ main crystal theme is playing. And then you see Squall, and you see him smile. Not some pleasantry, but honestly smiling.

Maybe they’ll be together forever and maybe they won’t. But she is the Sorceress, and he is her Knight. That connection goes deeper than puppy love, surely.
